Each ml of paste contains:
Ivermectin ………………………......................... 20 mg
Methyl parahydroxybenzoate.….....................… 1.8 mg
Propyl parahydroxybenzoate................................. 0.2 mg
EQVAMEC-P, by its active component – ivermectin, acts both against endoparasites (nematodes) and ectoparasites in horse. Ivermectin is a derivative of avermectin, isolated from the product obtained by fermentation of an actinomycete called Streptomyces avermitilis. In nematodes, ivermectin stimulates the production of GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid) from the neuronal synapse and enhances the GABA link in special receptors interrupting thus the transmission of the nerve impulse to the nerve junctions, paralyzing and killing the parasites. In arthropods, nerve impulse interruption occurs at the neuromuscular synapse. This leads to paralysis and death of the parasite.
EQVAMEC-P paste, administered at the recommended dose acts against following:
A. Nematodes present in:
- stomach: Habronema spp.; Trichostrongylus axei;
-small intestine: Parascaris equorum,Strongyloides westeri;
- large intestine: Strongylus vulgaris, Strongylus edentatus, Strongylus equinus, Triodontophorus spp., Cyathostomum spp., Oxyurus equi;
- lungs: Dictyocaulus arnfieldi;
- muscles and skin: Habronema spp., Onchocerca spp.
B. Arthropoda: Gasterophilus spp.
C. Acariens: Sarcoptes, Psoroptes, Chorioptes
In special cases, treatment with EQVAMEC-P does not exclude the application, if that is the case, of an appropriate local therapy for serious wounds caused by cutaneous parasites. All horse in the herd should be included in a regular and strict deworming program with increased attention to mares, foals and youth. Foals should be initially treated at the age of 6 – 8 weeks. Regular treatment will reduce the chances of worm arteritis and colic caused by Strongylus vulgaris.
POSOLOGY, MODE AND ROUTE OF ADMINISTRATION
Administration per os.
EQVAMEC-P dose is of 1 ml paste / 100 kg b.w., one notch of the plunger cup / 100 kg b.w. (20 mg ivermectin / 100 kg body weight). The syringe’s content is enough to treat 600 kg b.w. Insert the syringe into the horse's mouth, in the interdental space, as deeply as possible, placing the medication at the tongue’s base. Immediately after administration, raise the animal’s head for a few seconds. Before administering the paste care should be taken that there is no feed in the mouth.
If no health improvement is achieved, consult the veterinarian to reevaluate the diagnostic.
CONTRAINDICATIONS, PRECAUTIONS AND ADVERSE REACTIONS
Do not administrate the product in foals up to 6 weeks of age. Avoid using EQVAMEC-P in other animal species.
Do not administrate in case of hypersensitivity to the active substance or to other excipient. Pay attention to gestant animals and stressed by subnutrition, improper meteorological conditions, stationary etc.
The recommended doses have a large protection margin to animals. After using the product in horse massively infected with Onchocerca microfilariae, edemas and purulence might appear, due to the death of a large number of microfilaria. In case of a prolonged administration some irreversible derangements of the sense of balance might appear. It may be used in the gestation and lactation period. In horse, the administration per os of a dose of 1.8 mg/kg (namely of 9 x recommended dose) has no toxicity symptom, but at the administration of 2 mg/kg some visual disorders, depression and ataxia have been noticed.
There is no specific antidote known. In case of intoxication use a symptomatic treatment.
