This allows that the normal intestinal peristaltic moves reject the parasite.PYRATEL EQ, through its active component pyrantel pamoate from the tetrahydropyrimidine category is active against gastrointestinal nematodes and some cestodes, acting as a neuromuscular blocking agent that paralyzes the parasite’s muscles.
Pyrantel pamoate is poorly absorbed in the intestine. The maximum concentration in the blood is reached after 2 or 3 hours. It is rapidly metabolized and it is removed at a rate of 35- 50%, mostly in the feces, being most active against the parasites in the large intestine.
Because of its cholinergic action (nicotinic type) it is not recommended to be associated with parasympathomimetic substances and organophosphorus compounds.
It is used in horse to control endoparasitosis caused by nematodes (Strongylus vulgaris, edentatus and equinus, Oxyurus equi, Parascaris equorum) and cestodes (Anaplocephala spp.).
POSOLOGY, MODE AND ROUTE OF ADMINISTRATION
The dose of PYRATEL EQ paste, administered per os (orally), varies according to the weight of the treated animal, such as:
- against nematodes, the dosage is 660 mg pyrantel base/100 kg body weight, a notch respectively (5 ml paste) / 100 kg body weight. The content of a syringe assures the treatment of 600 kg body weight.
- against cestodes (Taeniasis) double dosage is used comparatively with those used against gastrointestinal nematodes, 10 ml paste/ 100 kg body weight.
Foals aged 2-8 months will be monthly dewormed.
Gestant mares should be dewormed 1 month before parturition, repeating the treatment 10 – 14 days after parturition.
Horses and ponies over 8 months of age shall be dewormed every 6 weeks.
For administration, the ring of the graduated syringe piston is fixed according to bodyweight, the syringe is introduced in the oral cavity of the horse, in the interdental space, as deeply as possible, leaving the medication at the base of the tongue. Immediately after administration, the animal’s head is raised for a few seconds. Before the paste administration makes sure there is no feed in the oral cavity.
